His belated apology comes after he had spent the days following the incidents praising Saudi Arabia’s ‘affection’ while ignoring the harassment complaints.

News of threats and intimidation by Mallorca and players’ fans had been rife since the tournament began, but the Spanish Football Federation had little to say about the incident until one Mallorca fan gave an extended interview to Cadena Cope on Wednesday, prompting Louzan to issue an apology the following day.

‘I have been in contact with the management of Mallorca since the incident happened and all I can do is apologise to all the fans,’ Louzan said. ‘In terms of sport, Mallorca has done a great job and I have only words of thanks to this great club, so we will try to make sure that this does not happen again.’

But the president of the Spanish Football Federation has not revealed what action he will take, and amid calls from Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams and others to pull the tournament out of Saudi Arabia, the RFEF is now in talks to extend the tournament, which ends in 2029, until 2034.
